Michael Hambouz: Pretty in Pink
For his solo exhibition at Calico, Michael Hambouz creates a new experimental body of work to navigate and resolve recent experiences with loss and disappointment. Through meditative multi-staged techniques (painting, drawing, woodworking, photography, paper cutting, audio experimentation, and video animation), he reclaims the power of the negative and casts it back to the viewer, transformed—“pink-washing” the dark spots and conjuring healing and positivity through radiant hues and energetic vibrating forms.
Hambouz lives and works in Brooklyn and received his BA with a concentration in painting, sculpture, and video from Antioch College in 1999. He has had solo exhibitions with the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), Chashama and The Durst Organization, and The Krasl Art Center in St. Joseph, MI (Factory Made currently on view Jan 29—April 24 2016), and has participated in select group exhibitions at Luhring Augustine, Cheim & Read, and the Williamsburg Art and Historical Society. His work has been featured in New York Magazine, Artnet News, Hyperallergic, Vice, and Design Milk, as well as in award-winning campaigns for Oliver Stone’s Untold History of the United States and Dexter.
